Why an Afternoon or Evening Connection Carries a Different Risk Than a Morning One

Two connections can have the identical layover time and still carry different kinds of risk, depending on nothing but the clock. A 45-minute connection at 7 a.m. and the same 45-minute connection at 7 p.m. aren't exposed to the same mix of delay causes — and the federal record shows exactly why.

The category that isn't independent of the rest of the day

The DOT's on-time performance filings sort delay minutes into five causes: carrier, weather, National Aviation System (NAS), security, and late-arriving aircraft. Four of those are, roughly, fresh each flight — a mechanical issue, a thunderstorm cell, an air traffic control slot, a screening backup. The fifth isn't. A late-arriving-aircraft delay means the specific airplane assigned to a flight is late because it's still finishing an earlier trip. Read the late-aircraft figure down that list and the pattern is a straight climb: 14.8% in the first two hours of the flying day, up to 48.3% by evening — more than triple. Read the carrier figure the same way and it runs almost the opposite direction: 60.7% early, down to 27.7% by evening.

Why the first flights of the day look so different

An early-morning departure is, for most aircraft, the first leg of the day. There's no earlier trip for it to inherit a delay from — the plane spent the night at the gate. So when an early-morning flight is late, the filings attribute most of that lateness (60.7% of the delay minutes) to the carrier category — a direct, same-day cause, with no upstream flight involved.

By the time a flight departs in the evening, its aircraft has typically already flown one or more earlier legs that day. Each of those earlier legs is a chance for a delay to start and never fully absorb into the schedule's buffer. By evening, nearly half the delay in the system (48.3%) is one flight's lateness handed down from a flight before it — a cascade, not a fresh event.

What the delay-cause breakdown adds is the "why" behind a pattern you'd otherwise just have to take on faith: an inbound flight's delay history on a route flown at 6 p.m. carries a structurally different composition of risk than the same route flown at 6 a.m., because a much larger share of that 6 p.m. flight's lateness is inherited from whatever already went wrong earlier in the day.
