Does Flying Early Really Mean Fewer Delays?

The oldest piece of travel advice there is — book the first flight out. It's mostly true, and the federal record shows exactly how much on-time rates decay as the day goes on, airport by airport.

“Take the first flight out.” It’s the oldest piece of travel advice there is, and unlike most folk wisdom, the federal record backs it up. On-time departure rates are highest early and decay through the day at nearly every U.S. airport. The interesting part is why, and how much — because the size of the effect varies a lot from one airport to the next.

The mechanism: delay compounds through the day

An aircraft flies several legs a day. When the first departs on time, the day starts clean. When something slips — a late inbound plane, a maintenance hold, a congested taxiway — that delay rides along to the next leg, and the next. This is the late-arriving-aircraft effect: the single largest category in the DOT’s delay-cause filings (BTS delay-cause reporting). A 7 a.m. departure has almost no accumulated delay to inherit. A 7 p.m. departure is riding a plane that’s been absorbing the day’s slippage since dawn.

Two forces stack up over the day: the cascade of late-arriving aircraft, and rising congestion — more traffic, thunderstorm build-up in warm months, and air-traffic volume all peak in the afternoon and evening. Together they bend the on-time curve steadily downward from morning to night.

How big is the effect?

Big enough to matter, and airport-specific. At many fields the earliest departure bank runs on time well into the high 80s or low 90s, while the last bank of the evening can fall into the 60s — a 20-plus point swing purely on departure hour. At others the curve is gentler. Congested hubs with heavy afternoon thunderstorm exposure show the steepest decay; quieter airports flatten out. That’s exactly why a per-airport curve beats the general rule: “fly early” is always directionally right, but how early, and how much it’s worth, depends on the airport.

What it doesn’t tell you

This is a historical base rate by scheduled hour, not a forecast for your flight. A 6 a.m. departure with an excellent on-time history can still be delayed by a storm on your particular morning, and the hour of day says nothing about which airline you pick or which season you fly in. It’s a prior — a good one — not a guarantee. It’s also worth the obvious caveat that the earliest flights demand the earliest wake-ups; the reliability gain is real, but you’re paying for it in sleep.
