Red-Eye Flights and Early Morning: Which Actually Has Better On-Time Rates
Federal filings show early-morning departures beat their airport average at all 13 large airports measured, by 10 to 19 points. Red-eyes beat it at only three. The numbers, the mechanism, and how to check your own airport.
If you are choosing between a 6 a.m. departure and an 11 p.m. red-eye on the same route, the early flight is the more reliable one — at every large U.S. airport in the federal record, without exception. The red-eye's reputation for running on time is mostly folklore, and at most airports a red-eye is worse than simply picking an average hour of the day.
That is a stronger claim than the usual "fly early if you can," so this guide shows the numbers behind it, where the red-eye does hold up, and how to check your own airport instead of trusting a national pattern.
What "on time" means here
Under 14 CFR § 234.2, a flight counts as on time if it arrives within 14 minutes of its scheduled time. Everything below uses departure performance by scheduled departure hour, drawn from the DOT's Marketing Carrier On-Time Performance filings, covering the twelve months ending May 2026 — the same window the site's tools report.
Early morning wins everywhere
Across the thirteen large airports with enough late-night departures to measure, flights scheduled between 05:00 and 06:59 beat their own airport's all-hours average by between 9.9 and 19.4 percentage points. Not most airports. All thirteen.
A few, with the early-morning rate and the gap over that airport's average for all hours:
- Las Vegas (LAS): 94.3 percent on time, 19.0 points above the LAS average
- Orlando (MCO): 93.0 percent, 19.4 points above
- Denver (DEN): 93.7 percent, 18.2 points above
- Phoenix (PHX): 94.6 percent, 17.2 points above
- Atlanta (ATL): 87.6 percent, 10.2 points above
- Salt Lake City (SLC): 94.5 percent, 9.9 points above
The consistency is the finding. Hour of day is one of the few things a traveller controls that moves reliability by double digits, and it moves in the same direction at every airport measured.
The red-eye is a coin flip, and usually a losing one
Departures scheduled between 23:00 and 01:59 tell a completely different story. Of those same thirteen airports, the red-eye window beats the airport's all-hours average at only three: Phoenix (+3.5 points), Las Vegas (+2.7) and Denver (+2.3). At the other ten it loses — Charlotte by 7.1 points, Portland by 6.3, Honolulu by 5.8, Atlanta by 5.7.
Atlanta is the clearest case, because it is the airport people most often have in mind when they say red-eyes are reliable. ATL red-eyes run 71.8 percent on time against an all-hours airport average of 77.5 percent and an early-morning rate of 87.6 percent. Choosing the red-eye over the 6 a.m. departure costs about 16 points of reliability, and choosing it over a randomly selected hour still costs about 6.
The three airports where the red-eye does win — Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver — are all western, dry-climate hubs. That is a pattern in the data, not a tested explanation, and three airports is a thin basis for a rule. Treat it as a reason to check your own airport rather than as a mechanism.
One caveat worth stating plainly: red-eyes are a small share of operations. Orlando filed only 738 late-night departures in this window against 13,194 early-morning ones, and airports below that threshold are excluded here entirely. A red-eye rate is always built on a thinner sample than a morning rate.
Why the mechanism is not what people assume
The usual explanation for early-morning reliability is that the aircraft slept at the airport, so there is no delay to inherit. That part is right, and the delay-cause data shows it cleanly. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for just 14.8 percent of delay minutes in the early-morning window, against 42.6 percent at midday.
The assumption that breaks is the next step — that a red-eye, being late in the day when the system has quieted down, gets a similar benefit. It does not. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for 39.2 percent of red-eye delay minutes, nearly the midday figure. A 23:00 departure is typically the fourth or fifth leg of that airframe's day, and it carries the accumulated delay of every leg before it.
What the red-eye does escape is congestion. National Aviation System delays — air traffic control, volume, flow programs — make up only 10.4 percent of red-eye delay minutes, the lowest of any window, against 23.3 percent at midday. Red-eyes genuinely fly in emptier skies. They just fly in aircraft that have already had a bad day, and the second effect is larger than the first.
Winter does not undo it
A common caveat holds that de-icing and winter ground stops erase the early-morning advantage. Across the full three-year record the site serves, that is not what happened. Comparing December–February against June–August for the early-morning window: Atlanta 88.5 percent winter against 87.2 summer, Denver 92.9 against 91.0, Chicago O'Hare 90.0 against 88.4, Phoenix 95.4 against 93.6, Las Vegas 94.5 against 93.3. Minneapolis is effectively flat at 91.4 against 91.6.
Early morning held up in winter at five of the six, and slightly beat summer at all five. Summer convective weather and its afternoon cascades cost the early window more than winter de-icing does.

National patterns are a starting point, not an answer.
