Methodology

Every figure is computed directly from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Marketing Carrier On-Time Performance filing (Bureau of Transportation Statistics, table 236), reduced to one row per airport per direction per month. For the window you choose, the tool sums those monthly rows and reports the direction you select.

  • On-time % = flights within 15 minutes of schedule ÷ flights with a filed time. Departures are scored on departure time, arrivals on arrival time — the same 15-minute federal rule (14 CFR § 234.2) applied to whichever end the direction is about.
  • Cancelled % and Diverted % are of all scheduled operations in that direction. A cancelled or diverted flight is never scored late, so they sit beside the on-time rate rather than inside it.
  • Delay-cause split. The DOT files, for each delayed flight, how many minutes of its delay fall to each of five causes — air carrier, weather, National Aviation System, security, and a late-arriving inbound aircraft. The split here is each cause's summed minutes ÷ the total across all five, over the window and direction shown. Causes attach to the flight's arrival delay in the underlying data.

Frequently asked questions

What do the five delay causes mean?

They are the DOT's own categories, split by share of total delay minutes filed. Air carrier delay is within the airline's control (maintenance, crew, fuelling); weather is extreme conditions; National Aviation System covers air-traffic control, volume and non-extreme weather; security is screening or breaches; and late-arriving aircraft means the inbound plane for this flight showed up late. The last one is usually the largest — delay begets delay down the day.

Why can departures and arrivals at the same airport look different?

Because they are scored at different ends. Departure punctuality asks whether flights left this airport on time; arrival punctuality asks whether flights reached this airport on time. A hub can push planes out on schedule and still absorb late inbound traffic, so the two rates — and their cause splits — diverge. Toggle between them to see both.

What counts as "on time"?

The federal 15-minute rule: a flight is on time if it reaches the gate (arrivals) or leaves it (departures) less than 15 minutes after schedule. Fourteen minutes late still counts as on time; fifteen does not. Every figure here uses that definition unchanged (14 CFR § 234.2).

Does this cover every airport?

Only airports served by the reporting marketing carriers appear, and a direction with fewer than 30 filed flights over the window is shown without a rate — too small a sample to be a statistic rather than noise. Smaller regional fields the big carriers don't report may not appear at all.
